Mastroberardino was founded in the 1750's. Located in Campania, Italy's southwest, it is still family owned/operated to this day. It is famous for saving Italy's indigenous varietals such as fiano, greco and aglianico, even when grapes such as merlot and cabernet were more fashionable and higher-yielding. It was up until the 1990's that Mastro was the only winery working with these ancient varietals in the area. Thanks to the late Antonio Mastroberardino's enormous contribution and dedication to these grapes, we can still enjoy them today. How's that for street cred?

This wine is a great introduction to aglianico. Blended with the piedirosso (another indigenous grape), this wine reminds us of the quintessential Italian table wine. The kind you'd get in a big jug at a bistro. Swig this softer, fruity red down with a big bowl of tomato pasta or chicken confit & green pea risotto.
